Rockhounding for Beginners
Always do your research before going out and come up with a basic plan.
Weather, temperature throughout the day
Type of Vehicle and height clearance
Critters, bears, mountain lions, ticks, scorpions, snakes - be prepared
Where can I fuel up or power up my EV
Hospitals or nearest city with medical aid
Always have water and a couple granola bars
Prepare but don't over prepare
Keep it simple the first time at a site
Browse through the recommended items and create a budget.
Get creative with items that can serve a dual purpose
Share your experience and give heads up on sites like Travelocity, yelp and google reviews
I can't stress this enough.
Make sure you are not a Claim Jumper or take from a National Park
Bureau of Land Management & Park Rangers are your friends
Make sure you pull permits or pay the claim prior to taking any specimen
Let someone or multiple people know where you will be traveling to
Check in with a Park Ranger and say Hi and they will keep tabs on you throughout the day
Carry a card with your basic emergency contact information and any allergies or medical needs
Make sure to enjoy the scenes and be present
Photos and videos are nice but do that for 5 minutes and spend the rest of the time being in the moment
Make your Own Map Board
I like working with large tabloid size Maps 11x 17 inch so I selected a board that is an inch greater all around at 12x18 inches and a 1/8 thickness. When closed the thickness is then 1/4 inch which makes it thick enough that it will not crack and it is lightweight that it is not cumbersome to carry.
