Finders Keepers - Keep any diamonds that you find

One of the only places in the world where the public can search for real diamonds in their original volcanic source, Crater of Diamonds is a one-of-a-kind experience that brings people from all over the world to Murfreesboro, Arkansas. Visitors to the park search a 37-acre field, the eroded surface of a volcanic crater, for a variety of rocks, minerals, and gemstones – and any rock or mineral you find is yours to keep.

01

You may bring your own mining equipment to search with (no battery-operated or motor-driven mining tools allowed), or rent tools from the park.

Best option is to rent buckets, shovels, screens, and other equipment at the Diamond Discovery Center

  1. Surface searching consists of walking up and down the rows of dirt looking for diamonds lying on top of the ground. Great to do after a heavy rain.
  2. Dig in the soil and screen for diamonds. Multiple Wet sifting stations are provided
  3. Digging deep holes, removing the right type soil (tiny gravel), washing the soil in a series of screens and patiently hand sorting the concentrated gravels from the screens.

Other Amenities

Walking trails, picnic sites, 47 Class AAA campsites (50 Amp/30 Amp/Water/Sewer), 5 walk-in tent sites, a gift shop, and Diamond Springs Water Park (seasonal), which is a great place to cool off after a summer day of digging for diamonds.

Diamond Hunting Tips

  • Look for a small, well-rounded crystal.
  • The average diamond is about the size of a match head.
  • A diamond weighing several carats may be smaller than a marble.
  • Diamonds have a slick outer surface that dirt or mud will not stick to, so look for clean crystals.
  • If you think you have a diamond, hold it carefully or place it in a small paper sack, available at the Diamond Discovery Center.
  • Diamonds may be any of several colors.
  • The only colors found at the Crater are clear, white, yellow, and brown.
  • Bring any stones you find to the Diamond Discovery Center for free identification and diamond registration.

Take your time and walk around and just wait for the ground to "wink" at you. Shinny objects will flash with the sun. It is a dirt plowed field the only shinny material out there are the diamonds.

If you are one of the lucky few that actually finds a real Arkansas Diamond then you will receive a certificate of authenticity. Make sure you stop by the Discovery Center if you feel you have something special.

Rubi's Advice

I stayed at an Airbnb for a total of 3 days. I really enjoyed my stay and the owners had equipment that I was allowed to take with me and avoided having to rent. I looked for a place with a pool so that I had a place to cool off after a day of plowing the fields. I also looked for a place with a washer and dryer.  Remember to bring a good towel.

Take some sifted gravel to go and ship it to yourself.

Up to five gallons of sifted gravel may be taken home from the diamond search area per person, per day.

It was nice to come home to some dirt and do a show and tell with family and friends. This was the best souvenir I could have gotten.

Tents, umbrellas, canopies, or other temporary shelters may be erected in the diamond search area and must be removed daily.

I prefer the umbrellas that you can clip to your chair and take anywhere. Click HERE for example.

I wish I had spent more time in this area. Three days is not enough for all of the amazing activities that Arkansas has to offer.

Pets are allowed in all facilities, with the exception of the park gift shop, park restaurant, bathhouses and Diamond Springs Water Park, as long as they remain on a leash under the owner's control at all times.
